I’ve always enjoyed volunteering for my daughter’s class. She loves having mommy around and I love being a part of her learning experience. Last year I tried really hard to volunteer with the entire school. I think I may have overreached a little bit. I signed up for too many committees thinking I’d be able to support each one in some way. That was a big mistake on my part.

This year, I am sticking to volunteering for my daughter’s class, and I limited my loyalty to the social committee. This year, I also stepped up and agreed to become the Room Parent. So far, my understanding is that my main duty is to communicate information between our classroom and the parent’s. The top priorities are to manage gifts for the teacher and assistant’s birthday’s, Teacher Appreciation Week and help coordinate any opportunities for parents to volunteer at school or in the classroom.

Phew! Okay, it’s not that much. But as a first timer, and working with a new teacher I wanted to make sure I started the year off right. And you know, make a good impression. I’m hoping it’s just going to be a lot of work upfront with making introductions, managing spreadsheets and making sure I’m following the rules.

As I mentioned, one of my tasks is to help coordinate teacher gifts. I completely failed at this not knowing our teacher’s birthday was at the beginning of October. This whole Room Parent thing was off to a late start. But, I was able to redeem myself with the help of a fellow mom who made a beautiful card with her daughter! Shout out to Jenne and Monster!

Turns out our teacher’s favorite kind of handmade gift from students are cards. You know how I know? I had her fill out a My Teacher’s Favorite Things list! I searched the internet and found many lists that I liked, but I challenged myself to get creative and make my own on Canva. And I’d like to share it with you.
