DIY Rustic Mason Jar Centerpiece

I’m so excited for this post because it comes from a special guest! Someone who will hopefully be contributing a lot more here on The Pinky Project. Drum roll please –> my sister!

She’s the one who recently got married. She is also Pinky’s Auntie DiDi and Godmother! She loves puppies and is passionate about saving them all. She is also extremely talented when it comes to crafting and DIY projects. In fact, she designed and created a majority of the pieces for her shabby chic wedding. It was amazing to see it all come together as the wedding day elements reflected her and her husband’s story and personalities so much.

Anyway, without further adieu, meet Andrea. She recently created a centerpiece to display on the coffee table in her living room. The star of the show, Mason Jars!

What my sister says is true! I love my husband, puppies, and I love crafting! I spend most of my down time on Pinterest looking for things to make on my own and I have so much fun doing it. My husband and I are fairly new homeowners and are still in the process of getting everything we want in the house. It’s been a very slow process but it’s one I can enjoy so that I can take my time to choose our décor wisely (I can be very indecisive). There’s nothing like coming home to a beautifully decorated home, especially when it’s something you made at such a low cost.

This is a centerpiece that I am really proud to show off. I chose these colors and my materials based on the color scheme of our accent pillows and because of the modern rustic theme we have going on. The Cremon Dahlia is one of my favorites and it is one that I heavily incorporated into our wedding day. Adding that small pop of color and accent décor breathed some life into our living room. It’s the start of many new projects and I’m looking forward to sharing them with you! Here’s how I got these babies done.

How-to Make Rustic Mason Jar Centerpieces

Materials

• Mason Jar ($1.19 at Michael’s)
• Multi-Surface Acrylic Paint (Premium Chalky- $1.99 at Michael’s or Matte Finish- $0.50 at Walmart)
• Sponge brush ($0.10 at Michael’s)
• Newspaper (Dig through the mail)
• Jute ($3.99 at Michael’s)
• Artificial flowers of your choice – I spent $4.79 but the price varies. Michael’s carries a wide variety and almost always has them on sale.

Design & Technique

Step 1: Set up all of your materials over a few layers of newspaper. I chose to pour the paint directly onto the newspaper for easier cleanup.

Step 2: Place your Mason Jar upside down, dip your sponge brush into the paint and apply one coat to the body of the jar.

The first coat will have a ton of streaks in it but that’s okay. Allow each coat to dry (or be semi-dry) before applying another. Apply as many coats as you like to achieve the look you want.

Step 3: Once the body of the Mason jar is dry, flip it over and repeat the same steps to the opening of the jar.

Step 4: When the opening is dry, take your twine jute and wrap it just underneath the rim of the jar. Secure it by tying a small bow.

Step 5: Place your flowers inside of the jar and BOOM! You have yourself a centerpiece!
