Mother’s Day is around the corner. What will you be doing to celebrate? I’m sure many of you would love to sleep in, have breakfast in bed, get a massage and maybe even a mani-pedi. I’m right there with you because I’d love all those things too. I imagine being awakened by my children jumping on the bed saying, “Happy Mother’s Day,” in sync as Daddy comes in with a tray of pancakes, coffee and a fresh picked flower. You know, just how you see in the movies. But that rarely happens. Ummm…it has never happened! And really, it’s okay.
All I ever really want for Mother’s Day is to enjoy a nice brunch with my family and feel appreciated. I want to revel in the blessings God has bestowed upon me. This happens every year, but if I could change one tiny thing….it would be for me to not have to orchestrate any of it. This year, I’m giving my family a heads up. My two requirements 1) for Daddy to help the kids plan and/ or create something to give me as a gift and 2) brunch, I love food! If I get new kicks, that would be the icing on my chocolate cake!
This year I’ll be celebrating my 6th Mother’s Day, 7th if you count the year I was pregnant with Pinky. I remember that Mother’s Day clearly because it was the day we announced I was pregnant. That day we had a nice steak out at my Uncle’s house. We’ve had many celebrations there, but that was one I’ll never forget. That Mother’s Day was also the last time I saw my Abuelita before she passed, so it is very special to me.
So being a mom now with two kiddos, I still have a lot to learn. But being celebrated and celebrating the mother’s before me is one thing I know is mandatory! With that said, if a good old breakfast or brunch is what you’re akin for, I’d love to share some of my favorite spots here in San Diego.
These are actual places my family has taken me to on Mother’s Day! You’ll notice I love Downtown and La Jolla, but there’s just something about the way the sun shines in both places that make it so warm and special for me. After brunching in La Jolla there are so many things to do, like walk to the beach or grab ice cream at Häagen-Dazs! Downtown is the same thing, you can walk to different shops, head over to Seaport Village or my favorite, check out the New Children’s Museum.
San Diego Brunch Ideas for Mother’s Day
The Cottage La Jolla
7702 Fay Ave
San Diego, CA
This is where I spent my very first Mother’s Day. Pinky was only 4 months old and I was still fresh in maternity clothes. After driving by this quaint little place, I had to come in. I mean it looks like an actual cottage or beach house, very inviting. The experience for me was more like going over to a friend’s house to eat. In 2015 The Cottage was voted Reader’s Choice in La Jolla Village News not once, not twice, but four times for Best Sunday Brunch, Best Breakfast, Best Omelet and Best Lunch. It’s definitely a local favorite! I recently connected with them on their Facebook page and it looks like they’ll be offering moms $5 mimosas! They were very responsive.
I love their Stuffed French Toast made on brioche bread, strawberry compote, mascarpone cheese and the crabakes, you must try the crabcakes!
Alfonso’s of La Jolla
1251 Prospect Street
La Jolla Ca, 92037
Last Mother’s Day (2015) my heart, and stomach, was calling for what my taste buds know to be hands down the best chorizo I’ve ever tasted. Wrapped in perfectly cooked flour tortillas alongside classic margarita, life simply could not get any better! They also have a good selection for kids. The food here, to me, is truly authentic.
Richard Walker’s Pancake House, Downtown San Diego
520 Front St.
San Diego, CA 92101
Who doesn’t love a good stack of pancakes? You’re crazy if you don’t, but if you’re weird like that (just kidding) Richard Walker’s Pancake House has a big breakfast selection, including a variety of crepes, really filling oven baked omelets, baked specialty pancakes and of course your traditional pancakes. Prices are a little steeper than most pancake houses, but it’s totally worth it. There can be a bit of a wait, especially for breakfast, but once you’re seated things move very quickly. I was surprised how fast we got our food after we ordered. This place is best suited for smaller groups, at least the one Downtown is. The most we’ve had in a group there was 8.
Café 222
222 Island Ave
San Diego, CA 92101
This hot spot is just down the street from Richard Walker’s. Next to pancakes, I love me some French toast. I had to visit Café 222 after seeing their Peanut Butter and Banana Stuffed French Toast featured on the Food Network for Bobby Flay. It was on my mind for weeks until I was finally able t sink my teeth into the rich dish, but it was worth the wait. Peanut butter is so essential to my diet. It’s my go to when I need to make a smoothie or need to up my protein, and hello, it just tastes so good. Like I said, this dish is rich, so make sure you have a glass of water or milk to go with it. You might even go as far as sharing it with someone. Aside from the food and service, I love the ambiance of Café 222. I’m drawn to old cafes with a lot of style and personality. They make me feel like I’m in another time zone, like I’ve traveled out of San Diego for a few hours to enjoy a tasty breakfast. For all you dog lovers, fur babies are welcome, as long as they’re outside on the patio!
So there you have it, my favorite places to brunch on Mother’s Day! I can’t wait to add to this list. Although, I just might be returning to one of these famous spots this year!

Happy Mother’s Day to you too, Bri! I saw the photos Bernardo Winery has been posting and it looks like they’re going to have an amazing celebration. Maybe next year for me. I can’t wait to hear about your experience though.

Thanks for stopping by, Maureen. Brunch can’t be beat, right? I hope you have a fun Mother’s Day. What place did she choose?

Thanks, Michelle. I didn’t think of it that way. I guess it is the one day we can really take advantage of letting personalities shine, LOL! Not that it shouldn’t happen every day. I hope you have a wonderful Mother’s Day wherever you go!
