What’s your favorite Mary Poppins scene?
Mary Poppins the musical presented by Disney and Cameron Mackintosh, is practically perfect in every way! All the best parts of the classic movie are literally brought to life on the big stage. I for one could not stop smiling from ear to ear as each scene and every charismatic character brought me back to my childhood. The story line is so close to the original, give or take a few scenes, and the flow of the show, seamless.
Stefanie Leigh played an amazing Mary Poppins, pretty and poised. Leigh embraced the famous nanny’s personality and wit, making any die-hard Julie Andrews fan proud.
Nicolas Dromard, who played Bert (or Dick Van Dyke) was as chim-chiminy cheery as can be. And who can resist the adorable Jane and Michael Banks played by Camille Mancuso and Tyler Merna. I was super impressed by the entire cast, ensemble, orchestra, the set changes, the choreography – the entire production was truly magical.
There’s just something beautiful about a British accent especially one that sings and travels by umbrella. Some of my ultimate favorite numbers were:
- Jolly Holiday: This scene was so colorful and fun. The song is still playing in my heard. It was one of the first exciting adventures the children experience with Mary Poppins.
- Feed the Birds: The little old bird woman killed this song. The scene included a little animation from the original movie.
- Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious: Who doesn’t love this song? I wanted to jump on stage and learn the choreography. Leigh again was amazing singing, dancing, and saying Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious backwards without missing a beat or a breath!
- Step in Time: I must admit, this is the number I was dying to see. The sweeps did not disappoint as they tapped their way across the stage in and out of chimneys, across roof tops. And yes, Dromard, as Bert walked up stage left, then across upside down and then walked down stage right.
In all the Broadway musicals I’ve seen, Mary Poppins blows them out of the water. Maybe it’s because it’s a classic? Maybe because of the nostalgia, or the British accents or the color and wonder of it all. Mary Poppins the musical is a downright, all-around, amazing and vibrant show. I highly recommend you go see it with the whole family because I cannot possibly tell describe how wonderful the show is. You must go and see it for yourself. I also recommend this show for a fun date night. Thanks to Broadway San Diego, I enjoyed Mary Poopins on a double date with my sister and her boyfriend. Something we haven’t done in a long time. But, that’s what Mary does, she brings people together, right!
