Daddy and I didn’t go on our regular date night for almost two weeks, for good reasons. Two weeks ago we had to prep for our trip to California Adventure and the week after that we had to do some heavy spring cleaning. The Glee Concert though did make up for date night the weekend of spring cleaning! I still have yet to blog about all of that. Anyway, last weekend, we finally got back into the swing of things, making out with two date nights in one weekend…
- Supanee House of Thai in Point Loma on Friday
- Collaboration Kitchen on Sunday, you can read about it here
This post is focused on the spicy, delicious and authentic Thai cuisine of Supanee House of Thai. Daddy had mentioned that he wanted Thai food for date night. We have our favorites, but I wanted to try something new — a new location, new ambiance, new people. You know, I wanted to eat somewhere NEW! So I yelped, and found a Thai restuarant that had a 5 star rating. It’s pretty rare to find any establishment with 5 stars, let a lone a Thai restaurant. The reviews said the food was authentic, delicious and the service was good. Supanne, the owner of Supanee House of Thai started out as a caterer and that’s how most people in the reviews knew her. Daddy and I had to check this place out, and we did.
Supanee House of Thai is located in Point Loma. We were very familiar with the location because we had gotten married in Shelter Island at Bali Hai. We were very surprised, however, when we got to the restaurant to find that it was the old Deans Photo! Daddy used to work there once upon a time! It was a good laugh down memory lane. Anyway, the place is very small and pretty busy. Because of this it is not as family friendly as I’d like it to be, but we’re talking date night, so I guess that doesn’ really apply here. Be aware that there is no bathroom in the actual restaurant, you have to go upstairs with a key! Nonetheless, there is a restroom nearby.
The main reason we came was for the food, so here’s what we ordered.
Hands down, some of the best Thai food I’ve ever eaten. Now, I wouldn’t go around declaring that it’s THE best, but it is definitely up there for two reasons, 1) Freshness and 2) Flavor. I’d go as far as saying that this place is authentic, which it probably is, but how would I know> I’ve never been to Thailand! The vegetables were so crunchy, sweet, and fresh. The seafood didn’t taste like the ocean and it was cooked to perfection! I’m talking, scallops melting in your mouth and no rubbery muscles! Superb! All of our dishes were packed with intense Thai flavors and spices. Surprisingly, I enjoyed our Miam Kam Wraps. I was a little hesitant to order this, but it was suggested by our server if we wanted to have something fun! Fun, creative and unique is how I would describe this appetizer – okay not the best words, but trying to keep it simple. I’m not a lover of coconuts, but let me tell you, I was eating the toasted coconut with a spoon until they took the plate away. I absolutely loved it. Miam Kam Wraps were a build it yourself appetizer using Swiss chard if I’m not mistaken. There was a lot of ginger action, but again I was surprised at how it complimented the wrap as a whole.
Service The entire staff was helpful, respectful and offered some great recommendations. I can’t wait to go back and actually chat with the owner. I’m really big on customer service, and after having a discussion with Daddy about it, we have come to the conclusion that Thai restaurants are probably the most respectful when it comes to serving customers. I think it’s part of the culture, but it made me think back at all the Thai places we’ve been to. We’ve almost never had bad experience.
Anyway, let me tell you, I ate until I could eat no more. No I wonder, maybe this was THE best Thai restaurant I’ve ever been too…hmmm…I think I feel another blog post idea popping into my head. Two Pinky’s Up for this Date Night spot.
Here are some things we could have done, but didn’t…
- Take a walk along Shelter Island – it was too dark and cold so we just went home, but if we were a little more prepared, it would have been nice to walk to Bali Hai and reminisce about our wedding day!
- Stop by Grape Connections for a glass of wine. The wine bar is open daily from 12:00 to 6:00 pm. For a mere $5.00 you can taste 3 selections that change daily.
- Drive around Point Loma and look at some of the amazing homes in the neighborhood. Daddy and I used to do this when we were first dating and in college. We would drive up and down the streets day dreaming about living in one of those big houses raising our family! Today, still dreaming 😉
Have you been to Supanee House of Thai? If so, tell us what you think we should order at our next visit.

This place is pretty good, the seafood dish I had was one of the best. Normally when you order seafood from a place that doesn’t know how to cook seafood it turns out rubbery and hard to chew. Supanee House cooked the seafood perfectly, not a single rubbery bite. Highly recommended!
