My MomHero this week is another amazing woman I’ve known since kindergarten! We grew up in the same neighborhood for years, until her family moved 30 minutes away to Chula Vista, CA. I went to her baby shower nearly 5 years ago and we kept in touch over the years through Facebook, but when I got pregnant we started interacting a lot more. Something happens when you have kids! I’ve learned through this MomHero that Moms just like to stick together.
Meet My MomHero, Maria Aventurado, everyone! Mother, wife, and CEO of Slumber Parties By Maria Aventurado. She jokingly said she was a maid too – only for her house though, she’s not CEO of a cleaning service people! Maria is happily married to her husband Peter and together they have a wonderful son who is just so full of life, Jaden Jace who will be turning four years old this June. Maria loves shopping, getting pampered, and eats anything spicy, especially Thai food! She is an amazing woman who wears many hats, as if any mom just wears one. Maria she is a very loving mom, sexy and supportive wife, and successful business owner. On top of that, she’s outgoing and likes to have fun with friends. She always seems to be planning a party, part of the nature of her business, but even outside her business you can find her planning an egg hunt or a birthday bash. By the way, wish her a Happy Birthday! She just turned – did you really think I was gonna tell you! Haha! On a serious note, she is very involved in the San Diego Mom Community and regularly participates in mom groups. Maria is My MomHero because not only is she a great source of information for family activities, but she is also setting a great example for moms who are and want to be in business.
Because Maria is such an intriguing mom, I asked her a lot of questions so I have broken her interview into two parts. This post covers the balancing act of being a mom and a CEO, one of the main reasons I chose Maria as My MomHero. Not to separate the two because they are both one in the same! For those of you who have never been to a ‘Slumber Party’ before please know it is not an actual sleepover 🙂 Rather it’s a night for the girls to get together and have fun while learning about how to add some spice in your relationship with the best bedroom toys and products on the market. Slumber Parties offers a very sexy, yet very classy approach to their products along with a very discreet ordering process. Keep reading to learn more.
I admire that you are your own boss. You have a very interesting business and you embrace it so well. What inspired you to start your own business? Honestly, when my Son was 2 I worked as a full time Dental Assistant in a very mentally and physically demanding office. I would work 10 hour days and be so exhausted by the time I got home. My Son would always say “Mommy you work too much.” I knew back then I had to do something because I felt bad missing the most precious moments in our lives. Then when a friend of mine suggested I throw an in-home party I actually looked on the website, saw how much money you can make and then took that leap of faith. I really didn’t even know what I was getting myself into but so glad I did. I wish I would of started earlier like some Women when they’re 18, I would be rich by now!
What’s the most challenging thing, for you, about juggling your business and family life ? How are you able to run your business successfully while also taking care of your family? How have you been able to overcome these challenges ? Well owning your own business is much like working a full time job, the only thing is you’re the Boss! But you still have to set office hours or else your business will fall down the drain. So that’s what I do. I never work days that I don’t want to or else I will just end up regretting it. I do what I need to and not let anything else distract me like Facebook or my family. My Husband helps me out tremendously! He stamps my brochures, sends out any back orders for me and even takes my Son and picks him up from our Families homes if we need them to babysit for us. We both have great Moms (Jaden’s Grandmas) that are willing to watch him if “something comes up,” so it’s nice. We rarely have babysitting issues so we can plan our lives out very smoothly. But when work’s done for the day, it’s done. Even if my office is a mess, my work time is work and my family time never gets put on the back burner. My Husband knows that I work hard to ensure a better future for us so we both are a team when it comes to family duties like housework, cooking, cleaning and all the other things that come along with having a family and little one.
What advice would you give to a mom who wants to start her own business? It wasn’t easy for me so I’d be very surprised if it were for you. And if it is Congratulations! I was scared out of my mind to start my own business. I knew a lot of my time, effort, money would be going into starting my own business. I knew it was going to be worse than my current situation and then get better. But when it came down to it and I was living it, it really wasn’t as bad as I imagined. I guess being prepared for the worse but having a positive outlook on the situation helped. I read a lot of the “secret” and listen to self-help books so that really helps. Especially in my type of business even though you are in business for yourself you are never by yourself. We have a strong team and there is always someone there to help you out, listen, bring you up, or help you brainstorm to get you out of the “slumps.” But if you’re a Mom, do it! Your family will thank you and you will love the extra income and time you’ll have!
On a side note, what product do you recommend for spicing things up in the bedroom? You know, for those Moms in the market to have another baby; or for those who just want to surprise their man! Lube! Just kidding… Definitely lingerie because no matter how you think you look there is lingerie for everyone and it takes more guts to be naked than in lingerie. Then I would go on to books for you and your Lover to read to help communicate your desires with each other and of course games! We fall into a routine sometime especially when we come home from a long day we probably talk about “work, kids, school, what’s for dinner, tomorrow, weekend plans.” It gets repetitive and love making gets put off. We should never do this because you do not want to wake up 20 even 10 years from now and not know who’s next to you. Communication is key and intimacy is a big part of that!
