Despite the heavy rain on Saturday, Daddy still took us on our surprise Day Trip to Julian! It was mine and Pinky’s first time there. The drive was beautiful, scenic, the foliage was amazing once we got into the mountain area. It felt like we had actually left San Diego for a moment.
We enjoyed a whole 2 hours of family time in Julian, but that was enough for us. We didn’t want to keep Pinky out in the rain for too long. Besides, there was a storm expected to hit and we did not want to deal with it on the way home.
Those 2 hours will be cherished forever as all of our family memories will be. Although we didn’t get many photo ops due to the rain, we did manage to get a few BlackBerry images to record our time spent. They aren’t the best, but it’s better than nothing. Enjoy!
We opted to eat at the closest place to our car. Parking is limited and we were on the street, so we ran right into the cozy and delicious goodness of The Candied Apple Pastry Company. I will warn you that the portions are small (see below) but the taste is big, well big enough. Daddy had a ham and cheese melt with their fire roasted chili, and I had a veggie and goat cheese sandwich with butternut squash soup with ginger and coconut, both perfect for a rainy day!
We hung out in the quaint deli majority of the time, the rain never let up. While we were there, a few other families trickled in and out. Most were visitors, but of course there were locals. The owner seemed to know who the locals were and what they were going to order. It’s one of those places where, “everybody knows you;re name.” We could have literally walked Main Street in 15 minutes without stopping to look in any stores. I did not realize Julian was such a tiny town.
Pinky enjoyed watching and interacting with the customers. She loved the attention! We’ve recently noticed that she loves an audience and she is excited when people clap and cheer for her. It motivates her to keep going! She is so friendly and it’s fun to watch her when she’s around people outside her family circle. Here are a few photos of Pinky enjoying the attention.
Is she clapping for herself here? I think she is!
Pinky was scabbing off of my butternut squash soup, but as we kept letting her explore, we found out that she has a thing for pickles!
Before leaving the Candied Apple, we bought dessert for the road…a creme soda, coconut macaroon, and a soft pumpkin cookie with chocolate chips! Delicious! Then, we went to retrieve what every traveler to Julian retrieves. A Julian Apple Pie. We saw a few pie places, but we opted to stop in at the famous Julian Pie Company. We walked into a pie factory of several people stuffing buttery pie crusts with mounds of seasoned apples. It smelled so sweet and delicious inside…my mouth is watering as I write this. I’m not a huge apple pie fan, but I can now understand why Julian is known for their pies.
We took home a dutch apple pie, apple cider doughnuts and hot apple ciders for the cold drive home! I was definitely a fun day trip that we would love to take again. Maybe this time, snow will be in the forecast instead of rain!
